Prevent Fraud

At First South Financial Credit Union, your security is paramount. We take a proactive approach to safeguarding your financial information, but vigilance is a two-way street. This blog post empowers you to become an active participant in protecting yourself from fraud.

Red Flags: What We'll NEVER Ask For

Fraudsters are clever, but they often rely on common tactics. Here's a crucial first step: recognize when something feels wrong. Be wary of any communication, email, or phone call requesting the following:

  • Your Online Banking Login: We already have this information securely stored. There's no reason for us to ask you to verify it through email.
  • Your Full Card Number: While we might ask for the last four digits to confirm your identity during a call, we'll never need the entire 16-digit number.
  • Card Expiration Date and CVV: This information is solely used for transactions, not account verification. Only share it if you're initiating a purchase.
  • Your Full Social Security Number: We might require the last four digits for specific purposes, but a partial number via email is the most we'll request.
  • Temporary Passwords or PINs: These are for single-use only and should be treated with utmost confidentiality. Please don't share them with anyone.

Building a Fortress: Your Active Defense Strategies

Now that you know the red flags, here's how to fortify your defenses:

  • Question Everything: Be skeptical of any email or call requesting personal information. If you're unsure of a request's legitimacy, don't hesitate to contact us directly through our official website or phone number.
  • Don't Click the Bait: Phishing emails often contain suspicious links or attachments. Please resist the urge to click on them, as they could be designed to steal your information.
  • Password Power: Strong, unique passwords are essential for all online accounts, especially online banking. Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. Password managers can be a great tool for creating and managing complex passwords.
  • Monitor Your Money: Regularly review your account statements. This habit allows you to identify any unauthorized activity quickly. If you see something suspicious, report it to us immediately.
